SHE Manager

Due to an upcoming retirement, we are seeking to recruit a SHE Manager at our Darlington facility. This role will be on a permanent basis, reporting directly to the Head of SHE.

In this role you will be proactive regarding SHE requirements, continually striving to improve the performance of the company SHE standards. In addition you will assist in operations and people in such a manner that work is completed safely, efficiently, on time, within budget and to the correct quality standards.

Main responsibilities

  • Advise management on all matters of environmental health and safety
  • Keep informed on any new legislation and codes of practice and initiatives
  • Demonstrate SHE support and commitment by personal example and behaviour
  • Coordinate the implementation of the SHE management system to ensure Company policy and standards are met in line with legal requirements
  • Carry out and review risk assessments and method statements develop SHE plans where required to do so
  • Carry out inductions where required to do so
  • Identify areas of SHE training deficiencies and inform site management as appropriate
  • Coach employees and subcontractors in behavioural safety techniques
  • Carry out safety inspections and report in writing and advise on corrective action
  • Carry out safety audits in line with company procedures
  • Promote safety campaigns, training and safety initiatives
  • Disseminate lessons learned & best practices
  • Investigate accidents, dangerous occurrences and environmental incidents
  • Analyse statistics, identify trends and point out/advise on areas of focus
  • Chair/attend safety meetings/safety seminars/exhibitions and other forums, where required to do so
  • Advise on suitability of PPE
  • Liaise with responsible managers to prevent unsafe acts and behaviours
  • Circulate SHE updates as necessary (SHE documents, Safety Alerts, Toolbox Talks as appropriate)
  • Provide detailed information to assist in claims defensibility
  • Assist in tender submissions where appropriate
  • Carry out supplier audits prior to and during employment (desktop and on site)
  • Assist in the sustainability programme

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • NEBOSH General certificate
  • IOSH Technical Member
  • Internal Auditor in ISO14001 and ISO45001
  • NEBOSH certificate in Construction (desirable)
  • NEBOSH Environmental certificate (desirable)
  • Good knowledge of Heavy Steel Fabrication & Construction Industries
  • Experience of working in a unionised environment
  • Report writing and presentations
  • Good communication both written and verbal
  • Works well in a team as well as on own initiative
