Tyne Metro Bridge

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, more commonly known as the Metro Bridge, is a two track rail bridge for the Metropolitan System across the River Tyne, between Newcastle and Gateshead.
The civil engineering work for this bridge was carried out by Cementation Construction Limited and the supply and erection of the whole steelwork package was conducted by Cleveland Bridge. Through the use of steel truss construction and fabricated box chords (fully bolted utilizing friction-grip bolts) the total cost of this project was £4.9M. This structure is comprised of three unequal spans (main span, 164.5m) at a total length of 352.5m and it was officially opened on 6 November 1981.
