Southall Western Access
Cleveland Bridge was responsible for fabricating the steel bridge components, delivering them to site and installing them over the canal. The company coordinated the crane arrangements on site and managed all sub-contracts for the delivery and installation activities. Cleveland Bridge completed risk reviews of the site and was involved in planning the installation from an early stage, working with all project partners.

Requirement
Main contractor FM Conway chose Cleveland Bridge to fabricate, deliver and install the bridge over the canal. We were chosen for our proven expertise in bridge installation projects in urban environments, and for our ability to meet the timescales of the project.

Solution
Cleveland Bridge offered its advice and expertise to help inform elements of the bridge design and deliver the new crossing into the site. The bridge design comprised eight haunched girders, delivered as four pairs. Six girders featured bolted splices, while the two outer girders had welded splices to enhance the appearance of the bridge for canal users. The 43-metre long girders were delivered as four braced pairs, and the total steelwork was 300 tonnes.
Challenges
The main challenge for this project was installing a bridge over a navigable waterway. This required possession of the canal and closure to all canal traffic. To minimise disruption, Cleveland Bridge completed the installation during a single overnight possession window.
Outcome
FM Conway were pleased with the performance of Cleveland Bridge on its first project with the company. Close collaboration from the early stages, risk analysis and detailed planning meant that everything ran smoothly. The client was very satisfied with the quality of steelwork supplied and the efficiency and safety of CBUK’s site operations.
FM Conway found CBUK to be very professional in all aspects of their bridge steelwork subcontract. CBUK delivered and installed a high-quality product safely over the Grand Union Canal, always working collaboratively with the team at FM Conway. The Western Access team would like to thank CBUK for delivering this important milestone on the project.
