The unique Twin Sails Bridge in Poole harbour, Dorset was completed in December 2011 once fabricated, supplied, erected and painted by Cleveland Bridge. It provided a second crossing of the Poole Harbour, opening up a large brown-field site for redevelopment.
The Twin Sails Bridge has two fixed approach spans at each side and a central lifting span consisting of two triangular shaped deck units, which when lifted symbolise the sails of a yacht reflecting the town’s maritime heritage. The bridge deck components were fabricated using Cleveland Bridge’s advanced facilities, before being transported and finally assembled adjacent to the job site. The outer approach span sections weighed 178 tonne and 97 tonne respectively with the two central triangular sections each weighing 100 tonne.
