Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Headquarters
- Year: 1984
- Location: Hong Kong
Built in 1985, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is a founding member of the HSBC Group, sitting on the site of the bank’s first offices which were in use from 1865 to 1882. At the time of its construction, this structure was the most expensive skyscraper ever built, costing $668 million.
Cleveland Bridge worked closely with Arup on the structural steelwork design, to an extremely tight programme, with the total tonnage for this project at approximately 27,500te. The completed building is arranged in five zones of eight floors each, with each zone hung from huge trusses, supported on eight tubular masts. The architect intentionally displayed three elements on the outside of the building, to clearly express the structural form.
