Dover Harbour Bridges

  • Year: 1980
  • Location: Dover, England

As the busiest ferry port in Northern Europe, Dover sees an estimated 16 million passengers travelling through it each year. With higher levels of traffic predicted, Dover Harbour responded with a series of improvements including the construction of two roll-on-roll-off bridges of which CBUK were responsible for, based on a design and construct contract.

The total tonnage for this project was 1,250te with each bridge deck weighing 64te over a 54m x 9m area as well as Portal Dolphins included in the design, each weighing 150te. The erection scheme took place in 1980 and utilized various cranes, with installation taking place in difficult winter conditions. As well as the erection of these two bridges, the scheme provided their control and operating systems including hydraulics as well as the mechanical and electrical systems.
