The contract for this project involved the design, demolition and re-construction of the Bishops Bridge Road structure, extending from the junction with Eastbourne Terrace, up to the Harrow Road roundabout in Paddington, London.
The new bridge spanned fourteen railway lines, two London Underground lines as well as the Grand Union Canal at the entrance to Paddington Station; one of the busiest rail terminals in London. The bridge was constructed in two spans, consisting of steel composite material with the deck over the railway lines launched into position. During the launch, the previous bowstring arch bridge had been temporarily lifted and lowered onto the new deck to enable safe demolition.
CBUK’s Role CBUK was responsible for the fabrication, site assembly and launching of the new plate girder bridge across the aforementioned railway lines.
During the planning of this project it was discovered that Isambard Kingdom Brunel was responsible for the original Bishop’s Bridge and that the section he built over the canal was his first iron bridge. After discussions between Westminster City council and the English Heritage, it was decided to dismantle the original bridge with an application to rebuild Brunel’s structure 200 yards along the canal, submitted in 2006.
