About the project

The Rio-Antirio Bridge, is the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge, crossing the Gulf of Conrith to link the town of Rio on the Peloponnese to Antirio on western mainland Greece.

Cleveland Bridge UK Limited in partnership with CI Sarantopoulos S.A were awarded the contract for the supply of all deck steelwork for the 2,252m long structure. Fabrication of 17,000 tonnes of steelwork took place at Cleveland’s Darlington facility between February 2002 and September 2003. In conjunction with Greek contractor Metka, Cleveland Bridge were also awarded the contract to assemble the steelwork on site. This assembly work took place between November 2002 and July 2004 with the bridge opened in time for the 2004 Olympic Games.
