About the project
Main contractor MPT chose Cleveland Bridge to fabricate, supply, install and commission the new viaduct, which slopes down from the Pomona station junction along a narrow strip of land between the Bridgewater Canal and the Manchester Ship Canal.
Cleveland Bridge was chosen for its proven expertise in urban bridge construction, its installation flexibility and its skills in working safely on confined sites.
Cleveland Bridge was responsible for fabricating the steel bridge components in its manufacturing facility, bracing them together in pairs, fitting shear studs and tension control bolts and applying protective paint treatment. The girders were then delivered to site, lifted by crane directly from the delivery vehicles and installed and bolted together.
“Cleveland Bridge brought valuable specialist expertise to the project. Their ability to deliver and erect this complex strategic heavy structure on such a narrow strip of land was very impressive. The steel components fitted precisely and the whole installation was completed ahead of time, ensuring the tramline extension programme remained on schedule.”
