North Shore Footbridge

Project Completed: 2009

About the project

North shore Footbridge (later named the Infinity Bridge) is the focal point for an urban regeneration scheme linking new development on the north shore of the River Tees in Stockton, to an existing business park to the south.

This iconic structure is a 2-span tied arch, having its 120m main span structurally continuous with a 60m-side span. The steel arch is a single slender rib at each end widening and bifurcating within the spans to form a double rib over the river pier. Thin precast concrete deck units are suspended from the arch and prestressed together longitudinally to form the arch ties. The bridge spans the 125m wide River Tees linking the Teesdale Business Park (Southbank) with the future planned North Shore Development.

CBUK’s Role - Cleveland Bridge were responsible for assisting in the design development of the structure with the lead designers (Expedition Engineering), fabrication of the structural steelwork, procurements of major components (Tuned Mass Dampers and Cabling) and the erection of the steelwork and concrete deck units.

Design – CBUK provided expert advice to the designer on erection methods and details for ease of fabrication and buildability. CBUK’s sister company Dorman Long Technology then provided full erection engineering services including erection scheme design, stage by stage erection analysis of the structure, aerodynamic response analysis, conceptual and detailed design of all temporary works and equipment, and production of method statements.

The total tonnage for this project was 450te and in 2009 the bridge was awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Robert Stephenson Award; Institution of Structural Engineers’ Supreme Award; North East Constructing Excellence Awards “Project of the Year”; Concrete Society Civil Engineering Award and in 2010, the Structural Steel Design Award.
