About the project
The Humber Sea Terminal is a freight terminal located at North Killingholme, Haven. Cleveland Bridge were subcontracted by Edmund Nuttall Limited to design, supply, fabricate and install a 395 tonne link span bridge connecting a fixed platform and floating pontoon in the Humber Estuary. This workscope also included protective treatment, deck surfacing, vehicle barriers, handrailing and transition flaps.
In addition to offering a technically conforming bid, Cleveland Bridge also offered an alternative orthotropic deck structure, with the contract awarded on the basis of this re-design. This alternative decking system reduced steelwork by approximately 400 tonnes, inducing a significant cost saving.
The structure was fabricated into sub-assemblies in the Darlington works and transported by road to a river side facility where the sub-assemblies were welded into the complete link span structure. From this river side facility the link span bridge was transported by barge and erected directly using a ballasting operation.
The final construction had a clear span of 80 metres, a width of 12 metres and a final weight of 425 tonnes.
