About the project
The HKCEC was designed by Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd, with structural engineering for the complex, gull wing roof by Skidmore Owings and Merrell. The Main contractor for the building was Hip-Hing Dragages J.V.
Cleveland Bridge were contracted to design connections as well as supply, deliver and erect around 16,300te of structural steelwork for the roof and Atrium link bridge. The company was also responsible for the supply and installation of around 4000 square meters of metal decking to support concrete floors. Due to space restrictions on site, the roof was prefabricated and assembled in an assembly yard in the Philippines, and delivered to site in sections 81m long by 15m wide, weighing up to 250te. The roof sections were moved from the ship to the building using hydraulic transporters, and strand jacked up to roof level, before being jacked into position over their support bearings. The four storey Atrium link bridge, with a span of 70m, was erected using a 40te derrick crane.
