Bridge Strengthening and Retrofit

Bridges are a long term investment for road and rail infrastructure: throughout their lives they require maintenance and repair and, with the huge growth of traffic and traffic loads, they require strengthening and adaptation for greater capacity.

The Rodenkirchen Bridge project typifies, on a grand scale, the challenges of bridge retrofit work, which include

  • the priority on maintaining traffic flow
  • technical complexity of engineering the changes
  • understanding the structure as it is modified
  • dealing with materials of unknown or obsolete specification
  • ensuring the safety of the bridge users and the workpeople
  • maintaining the integrity of the structure
  • maintaining the quality of a landmark structure,

and indeed the retrofit process can be much more demanding than building a new bridge

Cleveland Bridge has been associated with retrofit work on many historic bridges including the Menai Straits Suspension Bridge and Tower Bridge in London. Such projects range from minor works to major long duration contracts, but every one presents risks for the client and requires a competent experienced bridge contractor.

Over the last few years Cleveland Bridge has acquired substantial experience in this field and can offer a first-class service to bridge owners in the UK and, for larger projects, worldwide.
