Cleveland Bridge Expertise Helps South West Project Win National Recognition & Awards

The skill and expertise of Darlington UK based Cleveland Bridge has been instrumental in gaining prestigious awards and recognition for a unique engineering project in the South West of England.

The Tamar Bridge, the main link between Devon and Cornwall, was the first suspension bridge anywhere in the world to be strengthened & widened whilst open to ‘live’ traffic. Cleveland Bridge (built the original bridge in the late 1950’s) was main contractor on the (GBP) £34m project and worked in a partnership set-up known as ‘The Tamar Bridge Project Team’ with the two owning authorities (Plymouth City Council & Cornwall County Council) and the designer (Hyder Consulting.) The forty-year-old, three lane bridge was transformed during a 34 month ground breaking project into a five lane crossing with two cantilevered lanes and a state-of-the-art lightweight orthotropic steel deck.

News that the Project has won the prestigious national ‘Civil Engineering Award’, the Institution of Civil Engineers ‘Historic Structures Award’ and was a finalist in the Prime Minister’s ‘Better Public Building Award’ has delighted both management and workers at Cleveland. Chief Operating Officer, Derek Pattle, said:
Cleveland’s long experience of building bridges and in fabricating and erecting complex steel structures meant that we were able to contribute a wealth of knowledge and experience to an extremely challenging project. The fact that the work has been recognised with a prestigious award from within the industry is a tribute to all parties involved in its successful completion.”

The company currently has well in excess of (GBP) £200m of work in hand and still more imminent. On-going projects include a (GBP) £60m contract to supply and erect steelwork for the new Wembley Stadium, a (EURO) €34m joint venture at Boyne in Ireland to build the country’s largest cable stay bridge, a (GBP) £65m contract to refurbish Tinsley Viaduct at Sheffield, a (GBP) £18m contract to supply and fabricate 17,000 tonnes of steelwork for the new Rion Antirion Bridge in Greece, and a (US) $187m joint venture suspension bridge at Carquinez near San Francisco. Contracts in the Middle and Far East include construction of the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge in Bahrain and fabrication of two 400m high transmission towers across the Yangtze in China – both (GBP) £multi-million projects.

Cleveland Bridge was recently named as one of the UK’s top 100 contractors in a leading construction industry publication.

A global leader in technology based engineering, construction and steel fabrication, Cleveland has been Darlington based since 1877. The company is responsible for some of the world's most famous landmark structures including: Victoria Falls Bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Canary Wharf Office Tower, Humber Bridge, Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Building, Tsing Ma and Jiangyin Suspension Bridges in China to name but a few.
